From the treatment and technical analysis of the collected data with the citizens and institutions of the 34 municipalities of the RMBH during the Cycle A, it was possible to identify recent tendencies of metropolitan development. Economic, historic, politic and cultural matter of the metropolis were taken into consideration in an effort to rebuild the processes of territorial transformation of the municipalities.

An important and extremely valued aspect of the Macrozoning is the civil society’s participation in the construction of the proposals. To ensure the most democratic debate as possible, the participative process happens mainly through the execution of the public workshops, technical institutional seminars and the planning seminars, involving the technical teams of the municipalities and the civil society of all the 34 cities of the RMBH.
Around 250 people reunited in the last may 8th in the Pampulha campus of the Universidade Federal of Minas Gerais during the 1st Metropolitan Seminar of the RMBH (MZ-RMBH). The event organized by the technical team of the UFMG with the support of the Agency for Development of the Metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte counted with the presence of representation of the civil society; technical managers of 31 municipalities of the metropolitan region; members of the State – especially the Metropolitan Agency – and the team of the university developing the project.
Representatives of many sectors participated on the first row of public workshops that went through five cities. From February 12 to March 20, these representatives, from the civil society, the government and the technical team of UFMG, met for the Cycle A of the Metropolitan Macrozoning public workshops. In the end, there were a sum of 554 people during the process responsible for a preliminary identification of the Areas of Metropolitan Interest (AIMs) and the Zones of Metropolitan Interest (ZIMs).
The Brazilian metropolitan process of social production of the space has transformed and fragmented widely over the last decades. This revealed many important disruptions and news concerning the center-periphery “model” of rapid urbanization precedent of the 80’s. However, it is not anymore about urbanization by aggregation of the precarious peripheries, but a spread form of proliferation.
Shared management and poly-centralization are two of the central premises of the Macrozoning of the RMBH. The mapping of the 34 municipalities aims to identify the territories wherein the most important metropolitan are. The Macrozoning is one of the directives within the Metropolitan Plan of Integrated Development (PDDI), which beyond this project includes actions focused on sustainable development, better territorial occupation, urban accessibility, safety and health.

InMetro – Why does the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte needs to be revaluated?
The first public workshop of the MZ-RMBH1 happened on a Wednesday night of 12 February in Nova Lima. The meeting promoted by the technical team of the UFMG gathered representation of the civil society, the city halls and the city assemblies of eight municipalities from the east side of the RMBH.
The Macrozoning of the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte is one of the steps guided by the Metropolitan Plan of Integrated Development for the RMBH1’s planning. The PDDI2, released by the Government of the State in 2011, is today the main tool for the planning of the RMBH.
